Black Lion Audio B173 Preamp
Black Lion Audio B173 Preamp | A dedicated stage for microphone signal gain
When a microphone’s signal needs a gain stage before recording, choosing the right place for it in your setup can be a challenge. The Black Lion Audio B173 Preamp is a microphone accessory that serves that role: a preamp boosts a microphone-level signal as part of the recording chain. It’s relevant to anyone putting together a setup for recording vocals, spoken word or a miked instrument, whether that’s at home or in a dedicated studio. The practical benefit is a signal path with a preamp stage between the microphone and the equipment that records or processes the sound. That’s the job this product is named for; the title doesn’t establish extra features or technical figures, so I wouldn’t choose it on the assumption that it has a particular number of channels or a specific control layout. If you want to add a preamp to your microphone setup, the B173 is the product to consider.
Specialist Note
“Is the B173 a microphone, or the stage that works with one?” It’s a preamp, so think of it as part of the signal chain rather than the sound source itself. That distinction is useful when you’re building a vocal recording setup: the microphone captures the voice, and the preamp provides a gain stage before the recording equipment. It also suits recording a miked instrument, with the same basic signal path. The category tells you where it belongs—among microphone accessories—but it isn’t a complete recording setup on its own; you’ll still need the microphone and recording equipment around it. I’d start by deciding where a preamp fits in your chain, rather than assuming features the product name doesn’t promise.
