Caruba Reverse Ring AI-77mm
Caruba Reverse Ring AI-77mm | Turn a compatible lens into a close-up tool
Rather than adding glass in front of a lens, the Caruba Reverse Ring lets you mount a compatible lens backwards for close-up photography. It’s aimed at photographers who want to explore small subjects such as coins, textures or details in flowers, using a lens they already own. For those experiments, the reversed arrangement can bring the lens into a much closer focusing range than it normally offers. You focus by adjusting the camera’s position relative to the subject, so a steady setup and patient framing help. This is a simple, hands-on way to investigate macro-style images without making the ring itself responsible for magnification. It suits curious photographers who don’t mind a more deliberate process and want to see what their existing lens can do at close range. Keep in mind that this is a specialist close-up accessory, rather than a way to make a lens more versatile for everyday shooting.
Specialist Note
Newcomers to reverse rings often expect to focus as they would with a lens mounted normally; with this technique, moving the camera gently toward or away from the subject is often the more useful adjustment. The AI designation identifies the fitting, so make sure that’s the connection your setup needs. The 77mm size is there to match a lens with a corresponding front thread; it’s that match that lets the lens sit reversed on the ring. I’d use this for close studies of things like printed detail or a flower’s surface, with the camera supported and small movements to settle focus. It’s a dedicated approach, and framing can take patience.
