Cokin Nuances Extreme Reverse GND ND16 Soft 4 Fstops X Serie
Cokin Nuances Extreme Reverse GND ND16 Soft 4 Fstops X Serie | Tame bright horizons
At sunset, the sky can still be bright while the land has already fallen into shadow. The Cokin Nuances Extreme Reverse GND ND16 Soft filter is made for that exposure gap: a reverse graduated neutral density filter that reduces light most strongly around the horizon and fades toward the top. Its ND16 rating means four stops of light reduction, giving you more room to balance a bright strip of sky against a darker foreground in one frame. The soft graduation is suited to scenes where the change in brightness spans a broader area, rather than ending at a sharply defined line. It’s aimed at landscape photographers working with strong horizon light, especially at sunrise and sunset. The X Serie name identifies the filter in Cokin’s range; the practical point is its reverse graduation and four-stop reduction for scenes with a bright horizon.
Specialist Note
A bright band at the horizon can force you to choose between detail in the sky and detail in the land; this filter helps bring those exposures closer together. I’d consider it for a sunset over water or an open field: place the darkest part across the bright horizon, then adjust the transition to follow the scene. The soft graduation gives a more gradual change across the frame, which can suit a wide strip of glowing sky. Its reverse design puts the strongest reduction at the horizon, where sunset light often peaks. One limitation: with a jagged skyline, the graduated effect can darken parts of the landscape too, so check the framing before you settle on the composition.
