Epson Expression Photo XP-980

Epson Expression Photo XP-980 | A3 photo printing with six-colour ink

Epson’s defining decision with the Expression Photo XP-980 is to fit A3 photo printing into a compact all-in-one body. It measures 479 × 356 × 148 mm, yet prints up to A3, with scanning and copying for documents up to A4. That combination makes it a useful fit for a home workspace where photo output matters, but a separate large-format printer would take up too much room. Six Claria Photo HD dye inks—photo black, cyan, light cyan, yellow, magenta and light magenta—produce glossy photo prints with a long-lasting finish. For a favourite landscape or a family portrait, you can print at a larger size and use the XP-980’s borderless option to fill the sheet. It also handles ordinary documents, including automatic double-sided A4 printing, so it can serve as the main household printer rather than a dedicated photo machine. Creative projects have a place here too: Epson’s Creative Print app supports making photo books and greeting cards from your images. The XP-980 is a capable mix of photo and everyday printing; its scan and copy size tops out at A4, even though it can print larger.

What it does

• High-resolution photo output: The maximum print resolution is 5,760 × 1,440 dpi, and borderless printing is supported. That gives you the option of a full-bleed photo print rather than a white margin around the image.
• Two paper paths: The front feed is for A4 paper and photo paper, while the rear feed accepts thicker and special media up to A3. Switching between routine documents and a larger creative print doesn't mean rebuilding your paper setup each time.
• Print from a phone: Epson Smart Panel supports printing and scanning from a mobile device, and Epson Creative Print offers ways to turn photos into items such as cards and photo books. AirPrint, Mopria and Epson Connect are also supported.
• Direct control and memory-card printing: The 10.9 cm touchscreen provides on-printer controls, and the SD card slot lets you print photos directly from a memory card. Handy when you want a print without first transferring the image to a computer.
• Automatic A4 duplexing: The printer can print both sides of A4 plain paper automatically. For multi-page household documents, that saves the manual step of turning the pages over.
• Print speeds for documents: Epson lists ISO speeds of 8.5 pages per minute in black and 8 in colour, with maximum speeds of 28 pages per minute for both. The separate ISO and maximum figures give you a more useful view than relying on the highest number alone.
• CD and DVD printing: The XP-980 can print directly onto CDs and DVDs. It also supports USB, Ethernet and wireless connections, including Wi-Fi Direct, for different home and office setups.

Good to know

The front paper supply holds up to 100 sheets of standard paper, plus space for 20 photo sheets. Power use is listed at 17 W while copying, 8.2 W when ready, 0.8 W in sleep mode and 0.3 W when switched off. The rear feed accepts special media from 64 to 300 g/m², a broad weight range for thicker paper types.
