Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 2.1 (7stops) | Create longer exposures in bright light

Bright conditions can leave you with a shutter speed that freezes everything, even when you want moving water to blur or people to pass softly through a scene. The Formatt Hitech ND filter reduces the light entering the lens, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed without relying on a very small aperture. It’s aimed at photographers who want deliberate control over exposure in daylight, especially for landscapes and other scenes where motion is part of the picture. It can also help you keep a chosen aperture when the available light would otherwise push the exposure too far. This is a fixed-strength filter, so it’s best when you have a clear reason to make a substantial exposure change. For subtle light control, a less dense filter may be easier to work with; for pronounced motion blur, this one gives you much more time to expose.

Specialist Note

This is too dense for small exposure adjustments, but that’s exactly why it makes sense when you want a genuinely slow shutter in daylight. The 2.1 density cuts the light by 7 stops: as a guide, a metered 1/125 sec exposure becomes about 1 sec with the filter in place. That’s useful for smoothing a stream or softening waves; take a base meter reading, apply the filter, then lengthen the exposure by seven stops. The 100x100mm square format is worth factoring into your filter setup, so make sure your working method suits a square filter. I’d point landscape photographers toward it when the goal is visible movement, not a barely perceptible change.
