Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 3 (10stops) | Ten-stop light reduction for long exposures

Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 3 (10stops) is a square neutral-density filter that cuts light by 10 stops. It’s for photographers who want more control over shutter speed or aperture when the available light would otherwise limit their exposure. That makes it especially useful for long exposures: flowing water can take on a softer, blurred look, while moving clouds can streak across the frame. A strong ND filter can also help you keep a wider aperture in bright conditions when you want to manage depth of field without speeding up the shutter. The 100x100mm format suits a square-filter workflow, and the ND 3 rating tells you this is a substantial light reduction rather than a subtle adjustment. It’s a focused tool for deliberate exposure choices; the ten-stop cut calls for planning, particularly when you’re working with shutter speeds long enough to show movement.

Specialist Note

Once this filter is in your setup, the ten-stop reduction gives you room to use shutter speeds that daylight would normally rule out. The 100x100mm square format is a practical fit for photographers already working with filters in that size, while ND 3 tells you to expect a major exposure change, not a small tweak. For a stream, take a meter reading without the filter first: if it gives you 1/125 sec, adding ten stops brings you to roughly 8 seconds, which will blur the moving water. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want that kind of motion effect or a wider aperture in bright light. For multi-second exposures, plan on supporting the camera; this much light reduction can make handheld shooting difficult.
