Formatt Hitech 100x125mm (4x5) NDSEG 1.2 (4stops)
Formatt Hitech 100x125mm (4x5) NDSEG 1.2 (4stops) | Four stops for slower shutter speeds
To give moving water a softer, flowing look in daylight, use a neutral-density filter to reduce the light reaching the image and allow a longer exposure. The Formatt Hitech 100x125mm (4x5) NDSEG 1.2 (4stops) cuts exposure by four stops, helping when your preferred shutter speed would otherwise let in too much light. That extra time can smooth small ripples or make cloud movement more visible while you keep the aperture and ISO you want. It suits landscape photographers and anyone who wants to show movement rather than freeze it, especially in conditions where the unaided shutter speed is too fast for the effect. Four stops gives you useful room to slow things down, though the result still depends on the available light and your starting exposure. It’s a focused tool for shaping exposure, not a substitute for choosing the right shutter speed for the scene.
Specialist Note
Strong daylight can leave you choosing between freezing movement and showing it; this filter gives you four stops of room to work. For a waterfall or a landscape with moving clouds, take a base exposure and, in the area receiving full density, multiply the shutter time by 16 while keeping aperture and ISO fixed. A 1/250 sec reading becomes roughly 1/15 sec. The 100x125mm (4x5) format gives you a broad rectangular filter area to position for your composition. I’d recommend it to landscape shooters who want deliberate motion blur. One honest limit: four stops won’t automatically turn a bright midday scene into a multi-second exposure; the starting light still matters.
