Formatt Hitech 165x200mm (6.5x7.87) ND Heg 0.3 (1 Stop)
Formatt Hitech 165x200mm (6.5x7.87) ND Heg 0.3 (1 Stop) | Balance bright skies with a one-stop reduction
Your bright sky can come down by one stop while the rest of the scene stays readable. This Formatt Hitech ND Heg filter is a hard-edge graduated neutral-density filter: its darker area reduces light across part of the frame, making it useful when a bright sky and darker foreground are difficult to hold together in one exposure. The 0.3 strength gives a measured, one-stop adjustment rather than a heavy darkening effect. Its 165x200mm format gives you a broad rectangular filter to position across the scene, especially where the horizon is relatively clear and defined. It suits landscape photographers who want more control over the balance between sky and land without having to darken the whole frame. The hard transition is the key consideration: it works best when the boundary between bright and darker areas is fairly straight, and can be noticeable across an uneven skyline.
Using the one-stop reduction
A one-stop reduction gives you room to adjust exposure while retaining detail in a bright part of the scene. For example, if your starting shutter speed is 1/125 sec, one stop less light corresponds to roughly 1/60 sec at the same aperture and ISO. With a graduated filter, position the darker area over the brighter part of the composition and align the transition with the horizon or another clear boundary. That makes this filter most at home in scenes with a defined division between bright sky and darker land.
Specialist Note
0.3 means one stop less light in the covered part of the frame, so it’s a restrained correction: at the same aperture and ISO, 1/125 sec becomes about 1/60 sec. I’d consider it for a landscape with a bright sky above a fairly level horizon; place the graduated area over the sky to bring its exposure closer to the land. The 165x200mm format gives you a broad panel to position across the composition. The hard-edge transition is useful at a clear horizon, but it can look abrupt where buildings or uneven hills cross the boundary.
