Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 0.3 (1 Stop) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 105mm Graduated ND 0.3 (1 Stop) Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
The defining choice is a graduated neutral-density filter: it reduces light across part of the frame, helping manage the brightness difference between a bright sky and a darker foreground. Formatt Hitech made this a 0.3 filter, equal to one stop, so it offers a measured adjustment rather than a heavy reduction. That suits landscape photographers and anyone photographing scenes where the sky risks becoming much brighter than the land below it. The 105mm format is intended for photographers whose filter setup uses that size. Place the graduated area over the brighter part of the composition and it can help retain detail there while keeping the foreground more naturally exposed. It’s a straightforward tool for shaping exposure in-camera, particularly when you want the sky and land to sit closer together tonally without relying solely on editing.
Specialist Note
At sunset, a pale sky can pull attention away from a darker shoreline; this is where a graduated filter earns its place. I’d consider this one for landscapes where the brightness gap is present but not extreme. Its 0.3 strength gives a one-stop reduction, a restrained adjustment that can help hold the sky while keeping the foreground from looking unnecessarily dark. The 105mm format is the key practical detail: it belongs in a setup built around that filter size, so plan for it as part of your filter kit. It suits patient framing and a clear transition in the scene. One honest limit: one stop won’t tame every high-contrast view.
