Formatt Hitech FC ND 77mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 77mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
Keep a bright sky from overpowering the land beneath it. This Formatt Hitech graduated neutral-density filter reduces light across part of the frame, helping you hold detail in a brighter area while retaining a more balanced exposure elsewhere. Its ND 0.9 rating corresponds to a three-stop reduction, making it useful when the difference between sky and foreground is too large to capture as you want in a single exposure. It suits landscape photographers working with a clear horizon, or anyone photographing a scene with a bright upper section and a darker lower one. Place the graduated area over the brighter part of the view and align its transition with the horizon. That can help keep clouds from washing out while the foreground remains visible. The filter’s 77mm size is also important when matching it to your lens setup.
Specialist Note
First-time users of graduated ND filters can expect the whole frame to darken; this one is graduated, so its effect is intended for only part of the image. For a landscape with a bright sky, position that area over the sky and keep the transition close to the horizon to help balance the exposure. The 77mm designation is the size to match against the filter fitting on your lens. It suits photographers who often frame a distinct sky above land or water. One limitation: with an uneven skyline, the graduation can also darken the tops of buildings or hills, so it works best when the brighter area has a fairly clear boundary.
