Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter | Control bright light for long exposures
Bright daylight can make a long exposure impractical: even with your camera set for a slow shutter speed, the scene may be too bright for the result you want. This 39mm Formatt Hitech Firecrest neutral density filter reduces the light reaching the camera by 9 stops, giving you room to use longer exposures in bright conditions. That makes it useful for rendering moving water with a softer appearance, or for extending shutter time when you want movement in a landscape to register. It suits photographers whose lens takes a 39mm filter and who deliberately want a strong reduction in light, rather than a subtle adjustment. The ND 2.7 rating describes that density; the title also identifies it as a 9-stop filter. It’s a focused tool for long-exposure work, though the strong reduction means you’ll need to plan your exposure around it.
Specialist Note
A 9-stop reduction is a lot, so this isn’t the filter I’d suggest for a small exposure tweak. It’s the reason to choose this one when bright conditions are getting in the way of a deliberately slow shutter. The 39mm size makes it a specific match for a lens that accepts 39mm filters, so size matters here. For moving water, say your starting exposure is 1/30 second: adding nine stops brings that to roughly 17 seconds, which can give the water a much smoother look. I’d consider it for landscape photographers who want that kind of long exposure in daylight, and I’d expect to recalculate exposure after fitting it.
