Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter | Gain two stops of exposure control
On a bright day, you may want a slower shutter speed to show a little movement in a stream, or more control over exposure without changing your composition. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 0.6 filter reduces the light reaching the camera by two stops. That gives you room to make those adjustments while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO settings. It’s suited to photographers who want a modest, clearly defined reduction in light rather than a very long exposure. The 49mm size identifies the filter’s diameter, so it’s relevant when matching the filter to your lens setup. There’s no need to treat ND 0.6 as an opaque filter: its two-stop reduction is a measured change, useful for fine-tuning exposure in brighter conditions or introducing a gentle blur to moving subjects.
What two stops can do
A two-stop reduction lets you use a shutter speed four times slower for the same exposure, all else remaining equal. For example, a reading of 1/250 sec becomes about 1/60 sec with the filter in place. That can help suggest movement in flowing water or soften motion in a scene, though the result depends on how quickly the subject moves. It’s a small, predictable adjustment; for a much longer exposure in strong daylight, this density may not be enough on its own.
Specialist Note
The 49mm diameter is the practical detail to start with: it tells you which filter size to match to your lens setup. The ND 0.6 rating gives you a two-stop reduction, a manageable change when you want a little more time for movement without going to an extreme exposure. For a stream, for example, if your unfiltered reading is 1/250 sec, the filter brings you to roughly 1/60 sec at the same aperture and ISO; that’s a good starting point for a hint of water movement. I’d recommend it to someone who wants that gentle effect or modest exposure control. Its limit is equally clear: two stops won’t create very long daylight exposures by itself.
