Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter | Make long exposures in daylight
Bright daylight can make a long exposure hard to achieve: shorten the shutter time and moving water looks frozen; lengthen it and the image may become too bright. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest neutral density filter reduces the light reaching your camera, giving you more room to use a slower shutter speed without changing the look you want from your aperture. It’s suited to photographers who want motion to register over time, such as smoothing the surface of a stream or softening the movement of clouds. It can also help when you want to keep a wider aperture in bright conditions. The ND 2.7 rating makes this a strong light-reduction filter, so it’s best used when you’re deliberately aiming for a substantial change in exposure rather than a small adjustment. The 62mm designation identifies its filter size.
Specialist Note
At 1/30 second, this filter’s nine-stop reduction brings the equivalent exposure to roughly 17 seconds, with aperture and ISO unchanged. That’s a practical starting point for turning moving water into a smoother, continuous surface; use a tripod and adjust the shutter time to suit the scene. I’d suggest it to someone who wants a pronounced long-exposure effect, rather than a subtle exposure tweak. The 62mm size means you’ll need a lens with a matching filter thread. One thing to bear in mind: nine stops is a lot of reduction, so it can make ordinary handheld shutter speeds impractical. It pairs best with a deliberate, tripod-based approach.
