Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Smooth motion in bright light
For softer-looking waterfalls, blurred cloud movement or a slower shutter speed in daylight, an ND filter cuts the light reaching your camera. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter reduces exposure by three stops, giving you room to lengthen the shutter time or open the aperture without changing the light itself. It’s suited to landscape photographers and anyone who wants to show movement in a scene rather than freeze it. The 72mm size is the key detail when matching the filter to a lens. A three-stop reduction is a moderate amount: useful for gaining control in bright conditions, though it won’t create extremely long exposures on its own in strong midday sun. Think of it as a straightforward way to make motion visible while keeping your exposure choices manageable.
Putting three stops to work
At the same aperture and ISO, a shutter speed of 1/60 second becomes 1/8 second with a three-stop reduction. That’s long enough to begin recording movement in flowing water, while keeping the exposure settings easy to calculate. You can also use the reduction to open the aperture when you want less depth of field, provided your scene and focusing needs allow it.
Specialist Note
Bright daylight can leave you choosing between a fast shutter and the aperture you actually want; this filter gives you three stops of breathing room. For a moving stream, for example, changing 1/60 second to 1/8 second at the same aperture and ISO can show some flow instead of freezing every ripple. The 72mm size makes it a specific match for lenses that take 72mm filters, so check that measurement against your lens. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want a measured amount of motion blur without jumping straight to a much stronger filter. It won’t deliver very long exposures by itself in harsh midday light.
