Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter | Seven stops for longer exposures
The defining feature of this Formatt Hitech Firecrest filter is its 7-stop light reduction: it gives you room to use a much slower shutter speed in daylight. It suits photographers who want to show movement in a scene, such as smoothing flowing water or giving clouds a gentle blur, while keeping their chosen aperture and ISO. The ND 2.1 rating describes the same strength in another way; it cuts the light reaching the camera by seven stops. That can turn a shutter speed of 1/125 sec into roughly 1 sec, a practical starting point for a long exposure. Its 72mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread, so it’s important that the diameter matches the lens you plan to use. This is a focused tool for controlling exposure, rather than a filter for changing colour or adding effects.
Specialist Note
Seven stops means you can make a daytime exposure last around a second instead of 1/125 sec, which is enough to soften the movement of a stream while keeping the camera still on a tripod. I’d consider this one when you want that deliberate blur but don’t want to close the aperture just to lengthen the exposure. The 72mm diameter matters at the point of fitting: it suits a lens whose filter thread is 72mm, so match that measurement before planning a setup. It’s a strong reduction, and for less dramatic movement or a shorter exposure, you may need a weaker ND filter instead.
