Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Smooth motion in bright light
Bright daylight can make a slow shutter speed impractical: water freezes in place, and moving clouds lose their sweep. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter reduces the light reaching your camera, giving you room to use longer exposures in bright conditions. It’s suited to landscape photographers who want motion blur in rivers, waterfalls or clouds, and to anyone who wants more control over exposure outdoors. It can also help you use a wider aperture in strong light when you’re aiming for a shallower depth of field. The filter doesn’t create blur by itself; you choose the shutter speed and aperture to suit the scene. A tripod is a sensible partner for long exposures, especially when you want the landscape around moving water to remain sharp. This is a practical way to shape how movement appears in a photograph without waiting for darker conditions.
Specialist Note
Will this Firecrest filter let you turn daylight water into a soft blur? Yes: its ND 2.4 density cuts the exposure by 8 stops, which gives you a much longer shutter speed to work with. For example, if your unfiltered exposure is 1/250s, eight stops brings it to about 1 second—use a tripod to keep the riverbank sharp while the water moves. The 72mm size is the other detail to pay attention to: it’s the filter size, so it needs to match the filter fitting on your lens. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want substantial blur in bright conditions. One limitation: the result still depends on the light and your chosen exposure settings.
