Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Slow your shutter in bright light
In bright daylight, you may want water to blur into a smooth flow or passing movement to soften, but a fast shutter speed can keep everything frozen. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 1.2 filter reduces the light reaching the camera by four stops, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed without changing the scene’s lighting. It’s a straightforward tool for landscape photographers and anyone working with motion in bright conditions. The 77mm size is the key fit detail: the filter is intended for lenses with a matching 77mm filter size. ND 1.2 is the density designation, while “4 stops” tells you the exposure reduction in practical terms. This filter is best when four stops is enough to reach the shutter speed or aperture you want; it won’t provide the same reduction as a denser ND filter.
For a simple exposure calculation, four stops turns a metered 1/125 second into roughly 1/8 second if you keep the ISO and aperture unchanged. That can help show movement in a stream or soften a moving subject against a more settled background. Take a reading without the filter, then apply the four-stop adjustment and check the result. The exact shutter speed you need depends on how quickly the subject is moving and how much blur you want, so treat the calculation as a starting point rather than a fixed recipe.
Specialist Note
The 77mm filter size is the practical detail to match to your lens: it means this Firecrest is for a lens that accepts a 77mm filter. Its four-stop reduction gives you a meaningful change in bright conditions without needing to alter your chosen aperture. For flowing water, for example, if your meter reads 1/125 second, keep the ISO and aperture the same and start around 1/8 second with the filter in place. That’s a useful range for showing movement rather than freezing every detail. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want that slower-shutter look. One limit to bear in mind: in very bright light, four stops may not be enough for especially long exposures.
