Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter | Make long exposures in daylight
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter is a 77mm neutral-density filter that cuts the light reaching your camera by 10 stops. It’s for photographers who want to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture when the available light would otherwise prevent it. That makes it particularly useful for long-exposure landscapes: moving water can blur, while clouds can take on a sense of motion. It can also help you keep a wider aperture in bright conditions when you want less depth of field. The 10-stop reduction is substantial, so this is a specialised tool for making a marked change to exposure, rather than a small adjustment. If you enjoy planning a composition and shaping how movement appears in the frame, it gives you a clear, deliberate way to do that. The 77mm size is the key fit detail; match it to a lens with a 77mm filter thread.
Specialist Note
Once this filter is on, you can work with shutter speeds that daylight would normally rule out. The 10-stop cut is enough to turn a starting exposure of 1/1000 sec into roughly one second, with aperture and ISO unchanged—handy for softening a stream or giving passing clouds visible movement. The 77mm size means it’s suited to a lens with a matching filter thread, so check that detail on your lens before setting up. I’d suggest composing and focusing first, then fitting the filter and adjusting exposure. One point to bear in mind: ten stops is a strong effect, so this isn’t the filter I’d reach for when you only need a modest exposure change.
