Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 4.8 (16stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 4.8 (16stops) Filter | Make daylight exposures much longer
Its defining advantage is the amount of light this ND filter holds back, giving you room to use much longer shutter speeds in bright conditions. It suits photographers who want to show movement in a scene rather than freeze it: think flowing water rendered softly, or clouds shifting across a landscape. It can also help when you want a slower shutter speed in daylight without changing the look of the scene through aperture choice alone. The effect is substantial, so it’s worth planning the shot before you fit the filter. Compose and focus first, then work out the exposure you need; with such a dense filter in place, judging the scene through the viewfinder can be difficult. For deliberate long exposures, that extra preparation is part of getting the result you want.
Specialist Note
The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 4.8 is built for turning bright-day scenes into long exposures. Its 77mm filter size suits a lens with a matching filter thread, so check that measurement on the lens you plan to use. The ND 4.8 rating is 16 stops of light reduction: as a rough example, a metered 1/125 sec exposure becomes about 8 minutes 44 seconds at the same aperture and ISO. That’s useful for smoothing moving water or recording cloud movement, but a tripod is essential at those shutter times, and anything moving in the frame will blur. I’d set focus and framing before fitting this very dense filter.
