Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter | Two stops for longer exposures
To soften moving water or show motion in a busy scene, a neutral density filter lets you use a longer shutter speed without changing the scene’s colour through the exposure choice alone. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter is an 82mm ND filter with a two-stop reduction in light. That gives you room to lengthen exposure, for example to render a stream with a smoother flow, or to let people moving through a frame blur while the surroundings remain still. It can also help when you want a wider aperture in brighter conditions, though two stops is a moderate reduction rather than a very strong one. It suits photographers who want to control shutter speed with a familiar exposure setup and are working with an 82mm filter size. The effect is straightforward: less light reaches the camera, so you adjust exposure to suit the look you want.
Using the filter
Start with the exposure you’d use without the filter, then compensate for the two-stop reduction. For instance, if your starting shutter speed is 1/60 sec, you can use 1/15 sec at the same aperture and ISO. That extra time is enough to record movement as a visible blur. A tripod can help keep stationary parts of the scene sharp during longer exposures; moving subjects will still blur by design.
Specialist Note
The 82mm diameter is the key practical detail: this filter is made for a lens or holder setup that takes that size, so check the filter size you’re working with before planning a shot. Its ND 0.6 rating gives a two-stop reduction, which I find a sensible amount when you want to bring movement into a scene without making exposure times extreme. For a waterfall, begin around 1/60 sec and move to 1/15 sec at the same aperture and ISO to make the water look softer. It also suits street scenes where you want passing people to blur. In strong midday light, though, two stops may not be enough for a very long exposure.
