Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stops) | Make long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can leave you with shutter speeds that are too fast for the smooth water or softened cloud movement you want. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is a strong neutral-density filter, designed to cut the light reaching your camera so you can use a much longer exposure. It suits landscape and architectural photographers who want deliberate motion blur, or who need more room to choose their exposure settings in bright conditions. Its 16-stop reduction is particularly suited to long exposures rather than small exposure adjustments. You’ll need a square-filter holder that accepts its 100x100mm format. With such a substantial light reduction, it’s sensible to compose and focus before fitting the filter, then check your exposure carefully. It’s a specialised tool for scenes where a modest ND filter won’t give you the shutter speed you’re after.
Specialist Note
Will this 16-stop Firecrest Ultra give me genuinely long exposures in daylight? Yes: that much light reduction can turn a quick exposure into minutes, which is the point of this filter. For example, a metered 1/60 sec exposure works out to roughly 18 minutes after 16 stops, so use that as a starting calculation and adjust for the scene. The 100x100mm square format means you’ll need a holder made for that size; it’s a good fit for landscape photographers already working with square filters. I’d use it for smoothing moving water or drawing cloud movement across a static building. The trade-off is the very long exposure time: it’s not the filter for quick handheld changes.
