Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85x90mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 85x90mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) | Gain longer exposures in daylight
Bright conditions can force you to use a faster shutter speed than you want, making it hard to show movement in a stream or clouds. The Formatt Hitech Onyx ND 1.8 reduces the light reaching the camera by six stops, giving you room to use a longer exposure without changing the scene’s lighting. It’s suited to photographers who want more control over shutter speed in daylight, especially when they’re aiming for visible motion blur or want to use a wider aperture in bright conditions. Its 85x90mm size is a practical detail to consider when choosing a filter for your setup. The effect is a set amount of light reduction, so it won’t adapt to changing conditions on its own; you’ll need to adjust your exposure settings around it. If a six-stop reduction suits the look you’re after, this filter gives you a direct way to pursue it.
Specialist Note
A fixed six-stop reduction won’t suit every exposure, but it’s exactly why this filter makes sense when you want a substantial, predictable change. I’d point it towards daylight scenes where movement matters: for example, a stream that looks static at a quick shutter speed. If your starting exposure is 1/60 sec, six stops brings that to about 1 sec at the same aperture and ISO, giving water time to blur. The ND 1.8 rating is the key here: it tells you this is a strong reduction, rather than a subtle trim. The 85x90mm format is worth factoring into your filter setup, too. It suits photographers who want longer shutter times without waiting for softer light.
