H&Y K-Series 100 x 100mm ND64 HD MRC ND Filter
H&Y K-Series 100 x 100mm ND64 HD MRC ND Filter | Create longer exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can make it difficult to use a slower shutter speed, even when you want moving water to blur or passing clouds to soften. The H&Y K-Series ND64 HD MRC is a neutral-density filter made for that kind of exposure control: it cuts the light reaching the camera, giving you room to use a longer shutter speed in brighter conditions. It suits photographers who want to make deliberate long-exposure images and who need a square 100 x 100mm filter format. The ND64 designation points to a strong level of light reduction, so this is aimed at a noticeable change in exposure rather than a subtle adjustment. It’s a focused tool for controlling shutter speed; it won’t freeze movement or replace careful exposure choices.
Using the ND64
ND64 corresponds to a six-stop reduction in light. As a practical starting point, a shutter speed of 1/250 sec becomes about 1/4 sec with the same aperture and ISO. That can turn moving water into a softer shape while keeping stationary parts of the scene defined. Metering and conditions still matter, so treat the calculation as a guide and check the exposure you get. If you need a faster shutter speed or the light is already low, this density may be stronger than the situation calls for.
Specialist Note
Keeping a slow shutter speed in bright conditions is the problem this filter is made to solve. The 100 x 100mm square format gives you a clear physical size to match against the filter setup you use, so check that detail before planning a session around it. ND64 means six stops less light; for example, 1/250 sec can become roughly 1/4 sec without changing aperture or ISO. That makes it a considered option for softening moving water or clouds in daylight. I’d steer you toward it if long exposures are your aim, but its strong reduction can be too much in dim light.
