The 100x100 format suits photographers who already work with square filters of that size. It’s a straightforward option when you want a measured reduction in light, rather than a very strong effect.
Specialist Note
An ND8 won’t cut enough light for every bright-day, multi-second exposure; its strength is a more moderate three-stop reduction that’s easy to work into ordinary shooting. The 100x100 size is worth considering if your existing square-filter setup uses that format, so you can add this filter to the way you already work. For a stream, take a meter reading without the filter, then try a shutter speed around one second; with ND8, that corresponds to a starting exposure of roughly 1/8 second before the filter. It also gives you room to open the aperture in daylight. I’d choose it for controlled, modest motion blur, not extreme long exposures.
