Kaiser Grey Filter ND 4X
Kaiser Grey Filter ND 4X | Two-stop light reduction
The defining choice is the 4X neutral-density reduction: it cuts the light reaching the camera to a quarter, giving you two stops more room to choose your exposure. That’s useful when bright conditions would otherwise push you towards a faster shutter speed or a smaller aperture than you want. The Kaiser Grey Filter ND 4X suits photographers who want to manage incoming light for a deliberate shutter-speed or aperture choice, rather than change the scene itself. Try it when you want a smoother look to moving water, or when you’re aiming for motion blur in a bright setting. It can also help you keep a wider aperture in daylight, though two stops is a measured reduction, not a way to overcome every lighting situation. Its straightforward purpose makes it easy to judge whether this level of light control fits the shot you have in mind.
Specialist Note
Exposure becomes easier to stretch with this filter in place: the ND 4X cuts two stops, so a shutter speed of 1/250 sec can become about 1/60 sec at the same exposure, giving moving water more blur. I’d suggest it to someone who wants that effect in daylight without jumping straight to a much stronger reduction. The black colour is a simple, understated look if you prefer your camera accessories to stay visually low-key. For a softer water effect, start around 1/60 sec and adjust for the movement and brightness in front of you. Just keep its two-stop limit in mind; in very bright conditions, it may not slow the shutter as much as you need.
