Laowa 15mm F/5 Cookie FF Black Sony FE (Auto Aperture)
Laowa 15mm F/5 Cookie FF Black Sony FE (Auto Aperture) | Ultra-wide views for landscapes and architecture
The Laowa 15mm F/5 Cookie FF Black Sony FE is an ultra-wide prime for photographers who want a broad view without using a zoom. Its 111° angle of view gives landscapes room for a strong foreground and lets you fit more of a building into the frame when space is tight. It’s made for Sony FE full-frame cameras, and the Auto Aperture version combines that wide perspective with manual focusing. Landscape and architecture photographers will get the most from it, particularly when they can take time to compose carefully. The fixed 15mm focal length encourages you to move your position and work with the scene rather than adjust a zoom ring. With a maximum aperture of f/5, it’s best suited to considered shooting in good light, or to situations where you can use a slower shutter speed.
Making the wide view work
At 15mm, what’s close to the camera can look much larger than what’s farther away. For a landscape, place an interesting foreground detail near the lower edge to give the scene depth. For a building, step back where possible and keep the camera level and parallel to the facade; this helps keep vertical lines looking more natural. The broad view rewards deliberate framing, since distracting edges can easily find their way into the picture.
Specialist Note
f/5 means I’d reach for this lens first in daylight, when you can keep the exposure straightforward and give your composition your attention. For a quiet landscape near dusk, a tripod lets you use a slower shutter speed rather than rushing the shot. Manual focus suits that deliberate approach: take a moment to set focus before you make the frame. The 15mm view is especially useful for architecture in confined streets; keep the camera level and include the facade’s base for a grounded composition. On a Sony APS-C body, the view is about 22.5mm equivalent, a less extreme perspective that still works well for buildings and broad scenes.
