Nikon HB-42 Sunhood
Nikon HB-42 Sunhood | Shade stray light at the lens
On a bright street, light from just outside your frame can wash across the front of a lens and create unwanted flare. The Nikon HB-42 Sunhood is a lens hood for shading the lens from that stray light. It suits photographers who want a simple way to manage harsh light while composing, especially outdoors or near a bright window. When a light source sits close to the edge of your composition, a sunhood can help reduce flare and retain contrast; keep the source just outside the frame for a practical starting point. The product name identifies it as the HB-42 sunhood, in the Lens Hood category. Its purpose is focused: shading, rather than changing how you expose or focus a photograph. Use the product name when matching it to your equipment, as the information here doesn’t establish which lenses it fits.
Specialist Note
The Nikon HB-42 Sunhood gives stray light a barrier at the lens, instead of making you shade it with your hand. I’d consider it when you often photograph with bright light just beyond the frame, such as a portrait beside a sunlit window or a street scene in strong sunshine. Keep the bright source just outside the composition and use the sunhood to help limit flare. The HB-42 designation is useful when you’re identifying this particular product; “Sunhood” tells you its role, so it’s clear this is a shading accessory rather than a filter. It’s a specific accessory, so don’t assume the name alone establishes a lens fit.
