Pentax Spotting Scope PF-85EDA w/ Eye Piece 20x - 60x (8-24 mm)

Pentax Spotting Scope PF-85EDA w/ Eye Piece 20x - 60x (8-24 mm) | Zoom in on distant subjects

When a bird or other subject is too far away for a closer look, a spotting scope gives you a way to observe it from where you are. The Pentax PF-85EDA is a monocular spotting scope supplied with an eyepiece offering 20x to 60x magnification, with an 8–24 mm range. That makes it suited to someone who wants to adjust the enlargement while observing, rather than use one fixed magnification. You can start at the lower end and move up as you decide how much of the subject you want to bring into view. It’s a straightforward choice for outdoor observation when a binocular view isn’t the format you’re looking for. The scope is black. The useful point here is the stated zoom range; it gives you room to choose your viewing setting, without making you commit to a single power.

Choosing a viewing setting

With a zoom eyepiece, you can make the adjustment as you observe. Begin at 20x to find a comfortable view, then increase the magnification toward 60x if you want greater enlargement. The right setting is a matter of what you’re observing and how you prefer to frame it, so there’s no need to assume you’ll always use the highest number. For watching wildlife, for example, a lower setting can be a sensible place to start before deciding whether to zoom in further. The 8–24 mm eyepiece designation and the 20x–60x magnification range are the key figures to compare when choosing this model. If you already know you want a monocular spotting scope with an adjustable zoom, those numbers make the PF-85EDA’s central offering clear. It keeps the decision simple: choose the amount of enlargement that suits the view in front of you.
