PolarPro Arctic CP - 49mm Threaded - Benjamin Hardman - 45% light transmission
Glacier ridges, iceberg faces and wildlife against snow all benefit when reflections are reduced and colours stay natural. The PolarPro Arctic CP - 49mm Threaded - Benjamin Hardman is a polarising filter with 45% light transmission, around half a stop brighter than traditional polarising filters. Developed with photographer Benjamin Hardman for the demanding light of Arctic photography, it brings that higher transmission to landscapes and wildlife work where there’s little light to spare. Use it to manage reflections on ice and water, bring out detail in a glacier scene, or add contrast to an iceberg without pushing its colours away from their natural appearance. The same combination is valuable when photographing Arctic animals in difficult light, where maintaining visible detail matters. This version has a 49mm threaded mount, and its Arctic focus makes it a specialised option for outdoor photographers rather than a general-purpose filter.
Polarisation and handling
- Chroma Polarization Technology: PolarPro’s colour-focused technology is intended to avoid colour shifts. That’s useful in pale, low-saturation scenes where a colour cast would be immediately noticeable.
- Glove-friendly grip: The enlarged gripping surface gives your fingers more purchase on the adjustment ring. You can make changes while keeping gloves on in cold conditions.
- Slim frame: The low-profile frame is compatible with most lens hoods. Keep a hood mounted while using the filter on a suitable lens.
- Tested in Greenland: Benjamin Hardman field-tested the filter during a sailing journey through Greenland’s ice fields. Its development reflects the demands of working in harsh Arctic conditions.
Specialist Note
Reflections can mask the texture you’re trying to show, and fiddly adjustments are the last thing you need with cold fingers. This filter’s 110° turn covers its full polarisation range in a short adjustment, so you can fine-tune the reflection on an iceberg or a patch of water without a long rotation. I’d point landscape photographers towards it for ice and glacier detail, and wildlife photographers towards it for Arctic scenes where the light is challenging. Its 49mm thread is the important fit detail: your lens needs a matching 49mm filter thread. That makes this a considered specialist filter, not a one-size-fits-every-lens purchase.
