PolarPro Arctic CP - 67mm Threaded - Benjamin Hardman - 45% light transmission
In dim light on ice, there’s little exposure to spare, but reflections can still hide detail and drain contrast. The PolarPro Arctic CP - 67mm Threaded - Benjamin Hardman is a threaded polarising filter with 45% light transmission, around half a stop brighter than traditional polarisers. Benjamin Hardman worked with PolarPro on a filter for the low-light demands of Arctic photography. That makes it relevant for landscape photographers working with glaciers and icebergs, where polarisation adds contrast and clarity, as well as wildlife photographers trying to retain detail in challenging light. PolarPro’s Chroma Polarization Technology focuses on accurate colour, so the scene keeps natural-looking tones. The 67mm thread fits a lens with a matching filter thread. It’s a specialised filter for demanding outdoor work, with a notably high transmission for a polariser.
Polarisation and handling
- Chroma Polarization Technology: PolarPro’s colour-focused technology is intended to avoid colour shifts. That matters when photographing pale ice, snow or other scenes where accurate tones are important.
- 110° adjustment: The full polarisation range is covered by a short 110-degree turn. PolarPro says this is five times faster than traditional designs.
- Glove-friendly grip: The enlarged gripping surface gives gloved fingers more purchase on the ring. You can make fine adjustments without removing your gloves in cold conditions.
- Greenland field testing: Benjamin Hardman tested the filter during a sailing journey through Greenland’s ice fields. Its development was shaped by work in harsh Arctic conditions.
Size and fit
The filter has a 67mm threaded mount, so it fits a lens with a matching 67mm filter thread. Its slim frame is compatible with most lens hoods, allowing you to keep a hood in place when the filter is mounted. The threaded design is the fitting detail to look for when matching it to a lens; the hood compatibility is useful for keeping your usual lens setup in service.
Specialist Note
The problem this filter tackles is losing too much light to polarisation when the Arctic scene is already dim. Its 45% transmission is around half a stop brighter than a traditional polariser, a meaningful difference when you’re trying to hold detail in wildlife or low winter light. For ice landscapes, use the 110-degree adjustment to move through the polarising effect quickly and find the contrast you want. The enlarged grip is especially welcome when you’re wearing gloves. I’d point this towards landscape and wildlife photographers working in cold, bright-reflection environments. Keep in mind that it still cuts light; its advantage is that it passes more than a conventional polariser.
