Rycote OM-08 Stereo Pair Omni-Directional Microphone
Rycote OM-08 Stereo Pair Omni-Directional Microphone | Capture a scene in stereo
Using two omnidirectional microphones as a stereo pair puts space and atmosphere at the centre of the recording. That design suits sound that comes from a scene, rather than just one source: the microphones pick up sound from around them, while the pair records it in stereo. The Rycote OM-08 is for musicians, sound recordists and video makers who want to record the character of a room or the spread of a performance. Try it for room ambience, acoustic music or a group playing together; placement helps determine how much of the space and each source comes through. Because the microphones pick up from all directions, they also hear sounds you might not want in the recording. A quiet, controlled location is a better fit than a busy room. The title gives no further technical details, so I’d choose this pair for its stereo, omnidirectional approach rather than for a particular connection or recording setup.
Specialist Note
Once the pair is placed, you can concentrate on the sound around it instead of aiming each microphone at a single source. That makes the OM-08 worth considering for recording room ambience, or an acoustic group where you want the instruments to sit together in a stereo scene. I’d place the pair where you want the room’s perspective to come from, then listen for unwanted sounds nearby: the omnidirectional pickup includes those too. It’s a straightforward idea, but it does mean the room matters. If you need to isolate one voice in a noisy space, this isn’t the approach I’d start with.
