Schneider-Kreuznach MPTV HLYWD BLK Magic 1/2 4x5.65
Schneider-Kreuznach MPTV HLYWD BLK Magic 1/2 4x5.65 | Gentle, cinematic diffusion
Highlights take on a softer glow, while faces gain a gentler rendering, for a more considered cinema look straight in camera. The Schneider-Kreuznach Hollywood Black Magic 1/2 is a 4x5.65 filter for filmmakers who want to temper a crisp digital image without making the whole frame feel heavily diffused. It’s especially suited to portrait close-ups, interviews and scenes with practical lights in frame, where a little softness can flatter skin and take the edge off bright points of light. The 1/2 grade gives you a defined effect to work with; it’s a deliberate look rather than an invisible correction. Use it when that character supports the scene, not as an automatic choice for every shot. For a cinematographer building a consistent visual style, it offers a direct way to shape the image during capture.
Specialist Note
1/2 is a noticeable but controlled grade: in practice, you can shape the image without pushing it into an overtly hazy look. The 4x5.65 format makes this a cinema-filtration option for a matching setup, so it suits cinematographers working with a filter tray rather than photographers looking for a small screw-on filter. I’d consider it for a close interview or a portrait scene with bright lights in the background; keep the lighting intentional and let the filter soften the presentation. It’s a creative effect, not a neutral filter, so it won’t suit footage where you want every highlight and fine edge to stay crisp.
