Schneider-Kreuznach MPTV HLYWD BLK Magic 1/8 77mm
Schneider-Kreuznach MPTV HLYWD BLK Magic 1/8 77mm | A subtle cinematic softness
Hard, crisp-looking highlights can make a portrait or carefully lit scene feel more clinical than you intended. The Schneider-Kreuznach MPTV Hollywood Black Magic 1/8 is a creative filter for photographers and filmmakers who want a gentler, more atmospheric image. Its 1/8 grade is aimed at a restrained effect, making it a sensible starting point when you want to soften the overall feel without making the filter itself the focus. It suits portrait work, interviews and scenes where you want a less sharply rendered impression while keeping control of the lighting and composition. The 77mm size gives you a clear measurement to match when choosing a filter for a lens. Think of it as a look-shaping tool: most useful when you have a particular mood in mind, rather than as a filter to leave on every lens for every subject.
Choosing the right moment
This filter makes most sense when the polished, clinical character of an image is exactly what you want to change. In a portrait, use it to pursue a softer, more atmospheric rendering; for an interview or a composed scene, it can help support a deliberate visual mood. The effect is a creative decision, so it’s worth considering how it serves the subject and the lighting rather than treating it as an automatic improvement. If you prefer a consistently crisp, neutral look, this may not be the filter you reach for.
Specialist Note
“Is the 1/8 grade going to look too strong?” No: I’d consider it when you want a gentle shift in the image’s character, not an obvious filter effect. For a portrait, I’d start with the lighting and framing you want, then use this grade to pursue a softer, more cinematic feel. The 77mm marking is the practical detail to match to the lens’s filter size; it’s not a camera-body measurement. This suits photographers and filmmakers who like shaping a specific look in camera. One honest caveat: if you want a strictly crisp, neutral rendering, a creative filter may not be your preference.
