Tiffen 44CGN9H 4x4 CLR/ND.9 Grad HE Filter
Tiffen 44CGN9H 4x4 CLR/ND.9 Grad HE Filter | Balance a bright sky with the foreground
The defining choice is a graduated clear-to-neutral-density design: it lets you darken a bright part of the frame while leaving the rest clear. That’s useful when the sky is much brighter than the land or water below it, and you want to manage that difference while making the exposure. The Tiffen 44CGN9H is a 4x4 filter, marked CLR/ND.9 Grad HE. Its graduated effect is intended for scenes with a fairly clear boundary, such as a level horizon; the HE designation identifies the hard-edge version. That sharper transition can be positioned to meet a straight skyline or sea line, but it’s less forgiving when buildings, trees or mountains break across the boundary. This filter suits landscape photographers and anyone working with a bright sky above a darker foreground. It’s a focused tool for balancing that contrast, rather than a general-purpose filter for every scene.
Specialist Note
A pale evening sky sits above a calm stretch of water, and the horizon gives this filter a clear job to do. I’d line up the graduation with that horizon so the ND.9 area works on the sky while the clear area leaves the water unaffected. The 4x4 format gives you room to position the transition across the frame; the hard-edge grad makes most sense when that boundary is fairly straight. It suits landscape work with a clean horizon, especially seascapes and open country. One caveat: against an uneven treeline, the hard transition can be visible, so this is best when the scene’s shape suits it.
