Tiffen 44CY2 4x4 Cyan 2 Filter
Tiffen 44CY2 4x4 Cyan 2 Filter | Deliberate cyan colour adjustment
The defining choice is the 4x4 format: a square filter for photographers and cinematographers who want to shape colour as part of their image-making. Its Cyan 2 designation gives it a specific colour effect, making it a tool for deliberate colour adjustment rather than a neutral-looking result. It suits controlled work where you can assess the light and decide whether a cyan shift helps the scene. For example, if a subject or set is reading too red, this filter offers a way to adjust the balance in-camera instead of relying entirely on later editing. It can also be used to create a purposeful cool bias in a frame. The result depends on the light and the colours in the scene, so it’s best approached as a considered adjustment: make a comparison, assess skin tones and neutrals, and decide whether the shift is doing what you want.
Specialist Note
For photographers working on carefully lit portraits or product scenes, this is a colour-control filter with a clear purpose. The 4x4 format gives you a square filter to work with, while Cyan 2 signals the colour direction it brings to the image. For a product shot under light that looks too red, compare a frame with the filter against one without it, keeping the lighting and framing unchanged; that makes the colour shift easier to judge. You can also use it when a deliberate cool cast suits the mood of a still life. One point to bear in mind: it changes the image’s colour balance, so it isn’t the pick for keeping every scene neutral.
