Urth 58mm Ethereal 1 Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 58mm Ethereal 1 Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Add a softer, more atmospheric look
The defining choice here is the Black Mist effect: it gives you a way to move away from a crisp, neutral rendering and towards a softer, more atmospheric image. Urth names this version Ethereal 1, so it’s aimed at photographers who want that look to be part of their picture-making rather than something added later in editing. It can suit portraits, where a gentler feel may complement a subject, and scenes with bright lights, where a softer rendering can add mood. The 58mm size is the practical detail to match against the filter size your lens accepts. This is a creative filter, not a general-purpose improvement for every photograph: if you want maximum sharpness and a completely neutral look, you may prefer to leave it off. For deliberate, visible character, it gives you an in-camera option to explore.
Specialist Note
Put this on and you can make the softness part of the picture as you frame it, rather than trying to imitate it afterwards. The 58mm size gives you a clear matching point: use it with a lens that accepts 58mm filters. I’d try it for a portrait when you want a less clinical feel, or with bright lights in the frame for a more atmospheric result; compose with those highlights visible so you can judge their effect as you shoot. “Ethereal 1 Black Mist” is the filter’s own named character, so it’s a creative choice rather than an invisible correction. If you want a neutral image, take it off.
