Urth 62mm Magnetic ND8 (3 Stop) Filter Plus+: Control motion in bright light
The magnetic attachment is the defining choice here: it makes fitting and swapping the filter quick when light or your shot changes. The Urth 62mm Magnetic ND8 (3 Stop) Filter Plus+ cuts incoming light by three stops, giving you a fixed ND option for bright conditions. That reduction lets you use a slower shutter speed in daylight to show movement in flowing water, or create smoother-looking motion in video. Its German SCHOTT B270 glass and 20-layer CoraNano coating are chosen to preserve natural-looking colour while keeping reflections low. The magnetic system also suits photographers and filmmakers who want to change filters without spending time screwing one into place. This version has a 62mm filter size; its thin 6061 aluminium frame keeps the surround unobtrusive. The ND8 strength is fixed, so the filter provides the same three-stop reduction wherever you use it.
In the field
- Three-stop ND8 reduction: The fixed neutral-density value cuts light by a consistent amount. It’s useful when bright conditions call for a slower shutter to record movement.
- Magnetic attachment: The filter attaches magnetically, making fitting and swapping quicker than a threaded attachment system.
- Ultrathin 6061 aluminium frame: Its low-profile design keeps the frame from becoming an unnecessary obstruction in the image, including when using a wide-angle view.
- 20-layer CoraNano coating: The coating is intended to maintain colour accuracy, so the filter’s effect is on exposure rather than a deliberate colour shift.
- Low reflectivity: Average reflectance is no more than 1% across 420–680 nm, supporting clear image transmission through the filter.
Specialist Note
At a sunny canal, with ripples catching the midday light, this is the filter I’d reach for to soften the water’s movement. Its three-stop reduction gives a clear, usable change: for example, a shutter speed of 1/125 sec becomes roughly 1/15 sec at the same aperture and ISO. The magnetic attachment is especially handy when a shot changes quickly, while the 62mm size identifies the filter fitting you need. I’d recommend it to still photographers working with water or to filmmakers after smoother motion in bright light. Just remember that ND8 is fixed; it won’t vary its strength.
