B+W Basic CPL MRC 39
B+W Basic CPL MRC 39 | Reduce reflections and deepen sky contrast
Reflections on water, glass or glossy leaves can hide the detail you’re trying to photograph. The B+W Basic CPL MRC 39 is a circular polarising filter, made to help control those reflections and increase contrast in a blue sky. It suits photographers who want more control over these effects while shooting, rather than relying on editing later. Turn the filter as you look through the viewfinder or at the screen and the effect changes; the right position depends on the light and your angle to the subject. This can be especially useful for landscapes, shopfronts and scenes with reflective surfaces. A polariser can also reduce the amount of light reaching the camera, so it’s worth keeping that in mind when choosing your exposure. The 39 in the name identifies the filter size for lenses with a matching filter thread.
Using a polarising filter
The effect is adjustable, not an automatic fix. Rotate the filter while watching the reflections or sky, then stop where the result looks natural. Your position relative to the light matters too: a polariser’s effect on the sky is strongest when you’re shooting at roughly a right angle to the sun. For an even-looking sky across a very wide scene, check the frame before taking the shot, as the effect can vary across it.
Specialist Note
“Is the B+W Basic CPL MRC 39 mainly for reflections? Yes—it’s a circular polariser, so you can rotate it to reduce distracting reflections on water or glass. I’d suggest it to someone who often photographs landscapes or reflective shop windows and wants to judge the effect in the frame as they work. The 39 size is the practical detail to match: it’s for a lens with a 39 mm filter thread. MRC is the coating designation in the product name; the polarising effect still depends on your angle to the light, and it won’t remove every reflection, particularly from metal. Turn it gradually and watch the scene change.”
