B+W Black Mist 1/2 MRC Nano V-PRO 43mm
B+W Black Mist 1/2 MRC Nano V-PRO 43mm | Softens highlights with a subtle mist effect
Hard, bright highlights can make a portrait or night scene feel sharper and more clinical than you want. The B+W Black Mist 1/2 adds a soft glow around highlights and gently takes the edge off contrast, giving the image a more atmospheric finish. Its 1/2 strength is a considered middle ground: the effect is meant to be visible, without turning every highlight into a heavy haze. It suits portrait photographers, filmmakers and anyone drawn to a softer rendering of practical lights, reflections or bright windows. Try it for a close portrait with a light source in the background, or for a night scene where point lights are part of the composition. The result depends on the scene and how strongly those highlights appear, so it’s worth judging through your viewfinder or monitor as you frame. This version is 43mm; match that size to the filter thread on your lens.
Specialist Note
“Will the 1/2 strength make a visible difference?” Yes: it’s intended to soften bright highlights and contrast, while keeping the mist effect controlled rather than overwhelming the whole frame. For a portrait, place a bright lamp or window behind your subject and keep it in the composition; that gives the filter a highlight to work with. It’s also a characterful option for night scenes with visible lights. The 43mm size matters in a very practical way: it needs to match your lens’s filter thread. I’d leave it off when you want a crisp, unsoftened rendering, since the diffusion effect is part of every frame made with the filter fitted.
