B+W Black Mist 1/8 MRC Nano V-PRO 86mm
B+W Black Mist 1/8 MRC Nano V-PRO 86mm | Softer highlights, subtle cinematic glow
Bright highlights can look harsh, while skin and other fine details can feel a little too crisp. The B+W Black Mist 1/8 adds a gentle diffusion effect in front of the lens, softening the way highlights appear without turning the whole image into a heavy haze. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want a restrained, atmospheric look, especially for portraits, video and scenes with small bright lights. The 1/8 strength keeps the effect subtle compared with stronger Black Mist options, so it’s a good place to start if you want character without making the filter’s look the subject of every frame. This is a creative-effects filter, not a tool for extending exposure times like a neutral-density filter. The 86mm size identifies the filter diameter; the lens needs a matching filter thread to take it.
Specialist Note
There’s a limit to this look: the 1/8 effect still changes the rendering, so it won’t suit every scene or anyone who wants highlights kept completely crisp. That subtle strength is also why I’d consider this version for portraits and video where a softer highlight roll-off is welcome without an overt misty effect. For a portrait, keep bright areas such as a window or a light in the background, then expose carefully for your subject’s face. For night scenes, point lights can take on a gentler glow. The 86mm diameter matters at purchase: your lens needs an 86mm filter thread, or an appropriate way to fit that diameter.
