B+W Black Mist 1 MRC Nano V-PRO 55mm
B+W Black Mist 1 MRC Nano V-PRO 55mm | A softer look for bright highlights
Hard, bright highlights can make a portrait or night scene feel too sharp and stark. The B+W Black Mist 1 is a 55mm filter for adding a softer, more atmospheric look in front of the lens. It gently diffuses highlights, so point lights and bright areas can appear to spread into the image rather than remain crisply defined. It suits photographers who want that effect while making portraits, filming scenes with practical lights, or giving an urban night image a more cinematic mood. The result is most noticeable when there are strong light sources or highlights in the frame; in flat, even lighting, there’s less for the filter to soften. The “1” identifies the Black Mist strength, making this a considered creative effect rather than a neutral filter. Choose it for a deliberate rendering style, not when you need every highlight to stay pin-sharp.
Specialist Note
Does the Black Mist 1 give portraits a softer feel? Yes: it diffuses bright highlights, which can take the edge off a hard-lit face without asking you to soften focus. I’d try it with a bright light just behind or beside your subject, then frame so that light appears in the shot; that gives the filter a highlight to work with. The “1” is the strength designation, so expect a visible creative look rather than an invisible correction. The 55mm size is the practical check: it’s for a lens with a matching 55mm filter thread. If you want crisp, untouched point lights, leave it off for that shot.
