B+W Black Mist 1 MRC Nano V-PRO 72mm
B+W Black Mist 1 MRC Nano V-PRO 72mm | A softer look for highlights
Bright window light catching a portrait, or point lights looking too sharp in a night scene, are the kinds of moments where a Black Mist filter earns its place. The B+W Black Mist 1 is designed to soften the rendering of highlights, giving bright areas a gentler presence in the image. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want that effect while making the image, rather than relying on editing afterwards. The “1” identifies the version in this product’s name; it’s the detail to keep in mind when choosing a particular Black Mist strength. This model is the MRC Nano V-PRO version in a 72mm size. Match that size to a lens with a 72mm filter fitting. It’s a creative filter, rather than a tool for keeping highlights crisp, so it makes most sense when you want a softer rendering to be part of the look.
Specialist Note
For softening bright highlights in-camera, the B+W Black Mist 1 gives you a direct way to shape the look instead of trying to recreate it afterwards. I’d consider it for a window-lit portrait or a street scene with bright signs: fit the 72mm filter to a lens with a matching filter size, then frame so those highlights contribute to the image. The Black Mist 1 name matters here; this is the specific version to choose if its rendering suits your taste. It won’t be right for every frame—if you want pin-sharp highlights, leave it off. The MRC Nano V-PRO designation identifies this version, too.
