Benro Master Glass Filter 150x170mm Reverse-Edged GND8 (0.9) | Balance a bright horizon at sunset

At sunset, a bright strip of sky can make the foreground look too dark in the same exposure. The Benro Master Glass Reverse-Edged GND8 is made to help balance that difference: it’s a graduated neutral-density filter, with its strongest shading positioned for the bright horizon. The GND8 (0.9) rating corresponds to a three-stop reduction at the darkest part of the filter, so it can bring a bright skyline closer to the exposure of the land or water below it. Its reverse-edged graduation is especially relevant when the brightest area sits around the horizon, as it often does at sunset. The 150 x 170 mm glass format gives you a large filter surface to position across the scene. It suits landscape photographers who want to manage that horizon brightness in-camera, rather than letting the sky wash out while exposing for the foreground.

Specialist Note

A washed-out sunset horizon can be hard to recover once the sky has lost its detail; this filter helps control that bright band while you make the exposure. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers working with a fairly clear horizon, such as a seascape or open countryside. Position the darkest part across the bright horizon, then check that the graduation doesn’t darken important features above it. The 0.9 rating gives up to three stops of reduction at the densest point, which is meaningful when the sky is much brighter than the foreground. Its 150 x 170 mm glass format is substantial, so it’s best suited to deliberate landscape work rather than quick, casual snapshots. A jagged skyline can also make any graduated transition more noticeable.
