Caruba StepUp/Down Ring 86mm 82mm
Caruba StepUp/Down Ring 86mm 82mm | Fit a larger filter to your lens
The Caruba StepUp/Down Ring 86mm 82mm is a step-up ring for fitting a larger filter to a lens with a smaller filter thread. It’s for anyone whose filter collection includes a filter that doesn’t match the thread size of their lens. The ring bridges those two sizes, so you can use an 86mm filter on an 82mm lens. That includes UV, ND and polarising filters, giving you more options when choosing a filter for a particular photograph. Rather than buying another filter in the lens’s thread size, you can use a filter you already own, provided it has the matching larger diameter. This accessory is about fit, not an optical effect of its own: the result in the image comes from the filter you attach. It’s a straightforward way to connect the two sizes without changing the lens.
In the field
- Step-up fit: The ring connects a lens with a smaller filter thread to a filter with a larger diameter. That makes it useful when the lens and filter don’t share the same size.
- UV filter use: Fit a compatible UV filter for occasions when that’s the filter you want on the lens. The ring provides the size connection between the two.
- ND filter use: An ND filter is another compatible option. The ring lets you attach that larger filter to the lens thread it matches.
- Polarising filter use: You can also mount a compatible polarising filter. The ring handles the size mismatch; the filter itself provides its intended effect.
Specialist Note
Once it’s fitted, the ring gives you a direct connection between the lens and filter, so you can get on with choosing the filter for the shot. I’d point it out to someone with an 82mm lens and an 86mm UV, ND or polarising filter already in their kit. Screw the ring onto the lens, then attach the filter to the ring; that’s the whole job. For a change of filter, remove the one fitted and put on the other compatible filter. The useful point is its specific size pairing; it won’t bridge other thread sizes. If your lens and filter match those dimensions, it’s a neat way to put that filter to use.
