Cokin Creative 3 Graduated ND Filters Kit U300-02 (L-Serie)
Cokin Creative 3 Graduated ND Filters Kit U300-02 (L-Serie) | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
The defining choice here is a graduated neutral density filter: it darkens part of the frame while leaving the rest less affected. That’s useful when a bright sky and a darker foreground are both important in the same composition. This Cokin kit brings together three graduated ND filters in the L-Serie, giving landscape photographers and other outdoor shooters a set to consider when the scene’s brightness varies across the frame. Use one when you want to hold detail in a bright area without making the whole image darker. The graduated effect is most relevant when the brighter and darker parts of the scene fall in different areas of the composition, such as sky above land or water. It won’t balance every lighting situation, but it addresses a familiar challenge in scenes with a bright upper portion and a less bright foreground.
Using graduated ND filters
A graduated ND filter applies its darkening unevenly across the image, so placement matters: align the darker area with the bright part of the scene and keep the transition near the change in brightness. This can help retain more sky detail while keeping the foreground visible. The effect depends on the scene and framing; if bright and dark areas are mixed together, a graduated filter may darken details you want to keep. These filters are therefore especially relevant for compositions with a clear boundary between brighter and darker areas, rather than scenes where light is distributed evenly throughout.
Specialist Note
With three filters in the kit, you can choose which one to use for the scene instead of relying on a single graduated ND. The L-Serie designation is useful to keep in mind when matching the kit to your filter setup; I’d make that match the first practical step before planning a shoot around it. For a landscape with a bright sky over darker land, position the graduated area across the sky-to-horizon transition to help retain sky detail without darkening the whole frame. It suits photographers who often frame scenes with that clear brightness change. One limitation: a graduated filter can also darken anything else that falls beneath its darker area, so busy, uneven scenes need careful positioning.
