FLIR Breach PTQ136 Warmtebeeldcamera - 320 × 256 thermal sensor

In a dark yard, a person or animal can disappear from view, while its heat signature remains easy to distinguish. The FLIR Breach PTQ136 Warmtebeeldcamera uses a 320 × 256 thermal sensor to show heat patterns rather than ordinary colour footage. It’s a specialist monocular for night-time observation, wildlife watching and event recording where thermal detail is what matters. Its Boson VOx sensor refreshes at 60 Hz, so movement appears as a live thermal image on the built-in 1280 × 960 display. Thermal imaging also reveals warm subjects through smoke, mist and light foliage, useful when visible-light viewing is obstructed. Choose from seven colour palettes and FLIR’s Digital Detail Enhancement to adjust how much contrast and detail you see. The PTQ136 can store up to 1,000 still images or 2.5 hours of video internally, giving you the option to save observations as well as view them. It isn’t a conventional camcorder for recording a family gathering or school performance: the footage is thermal, so it’s best when seeing heat signatures is the point. USB Type-C provides a way to transfer saved material to a computer.

Thermal details and controls

  • 1–4× digital zoom: Magnify a subject on screen when you need a closer look. It’s a digital enlargement, useful for checking detail without changing the camera’s field of view.
  • 9.1 mm f/1.04 lens: The fast lens gathers thermal radiation for the sensor. A 24 × 19° field of view gives you a defined area to scan rather than a wide, panoramic view.
  • Close focus from 25 cm: The camera can focus on subjects as near as 25 cm, so nearby objects remain within reach of the viewing distance as well as more distant scenes.
  • Seven palettes and detail enhancement: Select from seven colour presentations and use Digital Detail Enhancement to bring out contrast in the thermal image. The options let you choose a view that suits the scene.
  • USB Type-C connection: Use the built-in port to transfer saved images and video to a computer. It also provides digital video output.
  • IP67-rated housing: The durable polymer body is water-resistant to IP67 and shock-resistant. A rubber eyecup with side wings helps keep stray light out while you look through the display.
  • Built-in mounting rail: The rail accepts optional FLIR adapters for mounting the monocular to compatible headgear or other supported setups.

Specialist Note

The main problem this camera removes is relying on visible light to pick out a warm subject in darkness. I like that the PTQ136 weighs just 210 g: it’s a compact thermal viewer to carry for wildlife observation or checking an area at night, without a bulky unit in your kit. For a nearer subject, its 25 cm minimum focus distance is useful for examining something close by; for a wider scene, work with the 24 × 19° view rather than expecting a broad panorama. The f/1.04 lens is a key part of its thermal imaging system, and the seven palettes give you a choice of how to read the image. One important distinction: this records thermal footage, not the normal colour video you’d choose for family memories.
