Formatt Hitech FC ND 72mm Graduated ND 0.3 (1 Stop) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 72mm Graduated ND 0.3 (1 Stop) Filter | Balance bright skies with the foreground
A bright sky can pull attention away from the rest of a picture. This graduated neutral-density filter helps reduce brightness in one part of the frame, so a lighter sky and darker foreground are easier to hold together in a single exposure. It suits photographers working with landscapes or other scenes where the brightness changes across the composition and you want to keep detail in both areas. The graduated design lets you position the darker part over the brighter area rather than reducing light evenly across the whole frame. That makes it particularly useful when the horizon gives you a clear place to line up the transition. The effect is deliberately modest: it can help with a manageable difference in brightness, while a very bright sky may still call for a different approach. It’s a straightforward way to bring more balance to scenes with a bright upper part.
In the frame
For a landscape, compose first and place the filter’s transition across the horizon, with the darker area over the sky. Check the edge of the scene as well as the centre: buildings, trees or hills that extend into the sky can cross the transition and change how the effect looks. The graduated design gives you control over where the reduction falls; it doesn’t darken the entire picture evenly.
Specialist Note
0.3 means a one-stop reduction, so I’d use this when the sky is only a little brighter than the land and you want a restrained correction. Line up the graduated area with the horizon, then adjust its position until the foreground stays clear and the sky loses some brightness. The 72mm size is the practical detail to match to your lens: it’s for a lens with a 72mm filter thread. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want to balance a bright sky without darkening the whole frame. One stop is a limited amount of control, though, so it won’t tame every extreme brightness difference.
