Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 165x165 (6.5x6.5) ND 3 (10stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 165x165 (6.5x6.5) ND 3 (10stops) | Make long exposures in bright conditions
Bright daylight can make a slow shutter speed difficult: the exposure gets too bright before you can capture the movement you want. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter reduces the light reaching the camera by 10 stops, giving you room to use longer exposures even in brighter conditions. It’s a square 165 × 165 mm filter, made for photographers whose filter setup accepts that size. Use it to soften the movement of flowing water, blur passing clouds, or give a busy scene a calmer feel. The ND 3 rating is also described as a 10-stop reduction, so you can plan your exposure around that amount of light loss. It’s particularly suited to deliberate landscape and architectural work, where you can take time to compose and calculate the longer exposure. The main trade-off is the point of the filter: shutter times become much longer, so a steady camera and careful exposure planning matter.
Specialist Note
“Does this Firecrest ND 3 really give me ten stops?” Yes—the title specifies a 10-stop reduction, which makes a very noticeable difference to shutter time. For example, a 1/125-second exposure becomes about 8 seconds, a practical starting point for softening a waterfall or smoothing movement in clouds. Its 165 × 165 mm square format is the key detail to match to your filter holder; if your setup takes that size, you can use the filter without changing your composition around a smaller format. I’d recommend it to photographers who enjoy planning a long exposure. Just allow extra time for the shutter to run, especially when working in changing light.
