Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Five stops for slower shutter speeds
Bright light can leave you with a shutter speed that’s too quick to show movement the way you want. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest neutral-density filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed in the same scene. Its ND 1.5 rating corresponds to five stops of light reduction. That makes it useful for bringing motion into a photo of flowing water, or for slowing the shutter in daylight when you want movement to register as a soft blur rather than a frozen moment. The 58mm size is intended for a lens with a matching 58mm filter thread. It suits photographers who want to work with shutter speed in brighter conditions, rather than change the scene or rely on a very small aperture. The key benefit is straightforward: five stops more exposure time to work with.
Specialist Note
Five stops won’t turn every bright-day scene into a very long exposure, but it gives you a meaningful shift in shutter speed without changing the light. If you’re photographing a stream at 1/30 sec, for example, five stops takes that exposure to about 1 second, enough to render the moving water with visible softness. I’d suggest this filter to someone who wants that kind of control in daylight and whose lens takes a 58mm filter. The size matters in practice: it needs to match the lens’s filter thread. For very bright conditions or much longer exposures, five stops may not be enough on its own, so think about the effect you’re after before you set up.
