Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 67mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 67mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter | Slow shutter speeds in bright light
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 67mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter reduces incoming light by six stops, giving you more control over exposure in bright conditions. It’s for photographers who want to choose a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture without letting daylight dictate the settings. The payoff is clearest with moving subjects: a flowing stream can blur into a continuous surface, while moving clouds can soften across the frame. It can also help you keep a chosen aperture in strong light when you want to retain a particular depth of field. Because the filter reduces the light reaching the camera, you’ll need to compensate with a longer exposure, a wider aperture, or a higher ISO as appropriate. The 67mm designation gives you a size to compare with the filter thread of the lens you plan to use. It’s a straightforward tool for making deliberate exposure choices.
What six stops can do
Six stops means the camera receives 1/64 of the light it would without the filter. That gives you room to extend exposure time in daylight, or to use a wider aperture while keeping exposure under control. The exact settings will depend on the light and the result you want.
Specialist Note
At midday, a canal current slips past a stone edge, and this filter earns its place when you want the water to blur instead of freezing every ripple. Six stops is a substantial reduction: if your meter calls for 1/60 sec without the filter, that becomes roughly one second with it, a useful starting point for a softer water effect. I’d suggest it to photographers who enjoy shaping motion or holding a wider aperture in bright light. The 67mm size is the detail to match to your lens’s filter thread. For exposures around a second, support the camera carefully; movement from the camera will soften the whole frame too.
